The beach and dunes of Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge are at the vanguard of sea level rise and other climate impacts. The foredune is an important feature that buffers the effects of extreme storms, and the entire dune system protects the estuarine systems behind it. The Visitor Center has several hands-on activity stations for all ages and a cozy "Kids Corner" full of nature books, puzzles, displays and a craft/coloring table.
The refuge collaborates with organizations such as Friends of the Dunes and Redwood Region Audubon Society and many others on special events and educational outreach.
